Living with the water
Water has shaped Laag Holland into what it is today. Discover in Etersheim how the Dutch have lived with rising and falling water levels for centuries, and experience at Droogmakerij De Beemster how a lake was transformed into a carefully designed polder landscape. In places such as Marken and Monnickendam, too, you can see how water has shaped trade, housing and daily life for centuries. Together, these places tell a remarkable story of resourcefulness, adaptability and the ongoing relationship between people and water.
Etersheim
In Etersheim, the story of water in Laag Holland comes to life. Visit the De Waterwolf Archaeological Mini-Museum, admire the Etersheim Braakmolen and set off to explore the Etersheimerbraakpolder. Here you’ll discover how residents have fought for centuries to keep their feet dry. What makes it extra special: this is the lowest point in North Holland, over 6.5 metres below sea level.
Beemster Polder
In De Beemster, you’ll discover how water management and history come together. Pause to admire the floodgate, which formed part of an ingenious defence system, and climb the tower of the Keyserkerk for a sweeping view of the polder landscape. These remarkable sights demonstrate how people, through ingenuity and perseverance, created a landscape that continues to inspire admiration to this day.
Iconic villages & towns
The best way to discover the stories of Laag Holland is on foot. Stroll through historic streets, past characteristic façades, old harbours and hidden alleyways, and be surprised by special sights along the way. On a city walk through places such as Edam, Monnickendam, Marken or De Rijp, you’ll not only see the best-known highlights, but also discover the details and stories that make these villages and towns so special.
Outside visiting hours - Draw your own plan
Laag Holland is rich in beautiful, fun, cosy or romantic places, which - precisely because they are so improbably beautiful, cosy or romantic - are crowded. As a result, the beauty can sometimes escape you. Tip: visit those places at a less crowded time of day! In the morning, for example, before sunrise. Or when dusk sets in and the area is resting from a busy day.
Walk across the dyke
If there is one place in Laag Holland where you can walk over the heads all year round, it is Volendam. Especially for foreigners, this old fishing village captures the imagination considerably. As soon as the last bus with day tourists has left, peace returns here and the noise of visitors gives way to twittering birds and you hear the rhythmic rocking of the waves against the quay. Then De Dijk is an oasis of calm.
Unique Marken
It’s no surprise that many tourists visit Marken. This quintessentially Dutch peninsula with its wooden houses is utterly charming. But, unlike most visitors, why not take the last boat to the island and stay the night? Because once the many day-trippers have left, you’ll have Marken (almost) all to yourself.
