Explore quiet Laag Holland - Here you will find peace, reflection and ancient nature
Looking for silence, space and depth? In Laag Holland, you will discover peat meadows and dykes where water and land have shaped each other for centuries. The core areas for rest are Ilperveld, Eilandspolder, Oostzanerveld and Het Twiske. Start at the Ilperveld Visitor Centre for content and then choose slow routes: farmland paths, stages of the Trekvogelpad and the Noord-Hollandpad. Along the way, find resting points for observation and reflection.
For deeper insights, there are small-scale excursions through Landschap Noord-Holland and IVN Twiske. Consider themes such as water management, peat & reed, and meadow birds. Preferably go in the early morning or afternoon: when the soft light streaks over reed beds and the sound of meadow birds accompanies your walk. Find current times in the Events and through various providers.
Where can you find peace and quiet?
Did you know...
...quaking bog is a rare type of soil that literally floats on water or mud? This unique natural phenomenon, which consists of sedge and grass roots, is found only in low moorland areas such as the peat meadow landscape of Laag Holland.
Here, dykes and water management have determined the rhythm of nature and man for generations. In areas such as Ilperveld and Eilandspolder, you can see how reeds, peat and shallow water together form a mosaic of tranquillity and biodiversity. Bog islands and open waterways provide space for characteristic species, while dike tracks lead you along high and low parts of the landscape. The subtle connection between water, soil and management makes the silence here both tangible and instructive.
