The Eilandspolder - Peace and quiet near the city of Alkmaar
In the middle of the Land of Leeghwater lies the Eilandspolder. You might not imagine it now, but centuries ago this peat island was surrounded by the water of the great lakes and was called 'Het Schermereiland'. Now that most of the water has disappeared, only a quarter of this protected nature area of 1950 ha consists of water.
Thanks to the marshy and nutrient-rich peat soil, the Eilandspolder is a paradise for various bird species, which makes it a paradise for bird lovers. Meadow and water birds such as black-tailed godwit, lapwing, widgeon and teal, but also rare marsh birds such as bittern and reed warbler are welcome visitors. Of course, this beautiful polder is not only a great place for bird lovers. Besides the many bird species, the ancient, typically Dutch landscape is a wonderful area for a relaxing walk, bicycle ride or boat trip. Discover it all here and come and enjoy the Eilandspolder to the full!
