UNESCO World Heritage Site Hollandse Waterlinies consists of the Defence Line of Amsterdam and the New Dutch Waterline. Together, they tell the story of the military defence of the Netherlands, where water served as an ally.

Did you know that the defence line of the Defence Line of Amsterdam and the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie together is more than 200 kilometres long? These lines form a green ribbon along the Randstad and are up to 5 kilometres wide in some places. They contain 96 forts, 2 castles and 6 fortresses, built between 1815 and 1940. In addition, the Defence Line of Amsterdam and the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie are among the largest military world heritage sites in the world, alongside the Roman Limes and the Great Wall of China. This makes them a special destination for anyone who wants to learn more about our history!
