The Oostervaart
The Oostervaart is a failed canal project of King William I. He planned to close off the IJ near Amsterdam with a dam and also dam up the Gouwzee near Marken. For shipping, a canal would be dug from east to west through Marken, passing between two pipe dams to the Dutch coast at De Nes from Broek in Waterland. From here, a new canal would be dug through Waterland and Durgerdam, where it would discharge into the (closed) IJ. The king had this project started in 1824, but four years later work was abruptly halted. Old land registry maps show the route of the planned canal, as well as the already constructed canal right through the island of Marken, today's Oostervaart and Zuidervaart.
Rozewerf
The Rozewerf is originally a mound, which is also called a wharf. This wharf is not named after the colour, but probably after the person or family Roos/Rozen, who were the owner/constructor of the wharf. Most of the houses date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but over time they have been considerably rebuilt. Rozewerf was originally landlocked, but over time part of the island was swallowed by the sea.

Years ago, the iconic 1839 lighthouse was used to guide boaters from the Wadden Sea to Amsterdam. Since the Zuiderzee was closed off, the lighthouse is no longer used for major shipping, but only for inland and recreational navigation. This does not mean that the lighthouse has gone unnoticed. You might have seen the lighthouse passing by once in the commercials of Heineken, Sikkens, Samson shag or other big brands.
Today, the Horse of Marken can only be visited from outside, as the lighthouse is still inhabited. Special after all! Yet this does not make a visit any less worthwhile. The lighthouse is not one of the most photographed lighthouses in the Netherlands for nothing.
