Regional produce route through De Beemster

(29 km)

Every season, the fertile Beemster clay soil is home to all kinds of delicious and honest local produce. Get on your bike and be surprised by the tasty regional products you will encounter along the way.

Centuries ago, the former Beemster Lake was drained using more than 40 mills. When the Beemster Lake was reclaimed, people could never have dreamed that such fertile clay soil would emerge. Once intended for cereal cultivation, this extra piece of land soon proved much more suitable for cattle and vegetable cultivation. In De Beemster, the cattle and vegetable farms can therefore not be counted on one hand. Scattered throughout De Beemster, you will come across numerous local produce shops and stalls where you can get the tastiest dairy products and vegetables. Tap your own milk at a milk tap, get a piece of real Beemster cheese or score the tastiest vegetables directly from the farmer.

Not only vegetables thrive on this fertile soil. Thanks to the firm clay soil, fruit trees take root perfectly here. As a result, De Beemster has several fruit orchards with cherries, apples and pears, among others. Depending on the season, the local produce shops and stalls - which you come across along the way - offer the tastiest fruit and fruit juices.

Besides dairy, meat, vegetables and fruit, you will find many more surprising regional products in De Beemster. Let this cycle route take you along the various local produce shops and stalls and let the flavours of De Beemster surprise you.
