Route - Look Listen Dike

(45 km)

The dike between Hoorn and Amsterdam looks peaceful. But it has been through a lot over the centuries. And it is only too happy to tell you about it. In 'Look Listen Dike', the dike takes you into its world through 14 different places.

At each location, a different short story about living with the water, told by a quirky dyke who has seen it all before. Full of enthusiasm, the dyke tells of the sea battles he has seen, the animals he loves, and the materials he is made of. But also about its complicated relationship with pumping stations and locks, the painful origins of its curves and its special bond with residents.

The route can be cycled and walked in its entirety, but can also easily be split into three sub-routes.

  • Sub-route 1 takes you from Hoorn to Edam - Episodes 1 to 7
  • Sub-route 2 takes you from Edam to Monnickendam - Episodes 7 to 11
  • Share route 3 takes you from Monnickendam to Durgerdam - Episodes 11 to 14

Episode 1. The real theatre of Hoorn
You are standing next to Hoorn's beautiful city theatre. But the real theatre, that's trip the Hoorn Hop. Because that's where a crazy spectacle took place centuries ago. And I was there.

Location: You are standing to the left of Hoorn's city theatre, next to the footpath, looking over the Hoornse Hop.

Episode 2. A dyke in retirement
How long have I been lying here? Centuries. I protected the hinterland first from a sea, later from this lake. But even a dyke of a dyke like me, once fought tired. Fortunately, I was not completely replaced. And I got help from unexpected quarters.

Location: You are on the parking lot in the Galgenbocht, near Hoorn.

Episode 3. Every bend a scar
See those curves? Most people love them. They think of me as winding dyke picturesque, authentic. But let me tell you something: those curves are there for a reason. A hint? It has to do with that monument you see nearby.

Location: at Monument de Weel in Schardam.

Episode 4. Forbidden for water
As a dike, I work closely with pumping stations and locks. But our working methods don't quite fit together. Because while for me it is very clear - water does not pass through, pumping stations are a lot less black and white in their water work. So that still clashes sometimes.

Location: On top of Pumping Station C. Mantel in Schardam.

Episode 5. The village versus the water
Do you already know the story about Etersheim? No, not the Etersheim of today, but that of centuries ago. A village that did not let itself be known. Bravely kept fighting against the powerful water. You can guess who won.

Location: On the dike, at the entrance to Etersheim, off the road to Oosthuizen

Episode 6. Pump or sink
Do you know what the funny thing is? When tourists visit me here, I often hear the amazement in their voices. About how the Dutch live below sea level. But the Dutch themselves I never actually hear about it. Except here then, but this is also the second lowest place in the Netherlands.

Location: On the dike, opposite Gemaal Warder.

Episode 7. Shipbuilders of Edam
When this sweet lake was a salty sea centuries ago, the town of Edam was known for shipbuilding. Fishermen everywhere, sailors, sailmakers, rope makers. And as a dyke, I saw them all passing by at close quarters, those huge ships. But when this beautiful lock was to be built, everything changed.

Location: Next to the old sea lock on the Oorgat in Edam.

Episode 8. The mystery of the eel
Do you love fish too? Or better yet, eel? Oh I love those creatures so much. Not to eat though, as a dyke I have been a vegetarian for centuries. But since the construction of the Afsluitdijk, the eel is one of the few fish I still see here. Volendam's most famous fish, shrouded in great mystery.

Location: At the beginning of the Noordeinde, near Wullempje beach, next to Hotel Spaanders in Volendam.

Episode 9. 1.2 Million
The great thing about my job as a dike is that I know what I'm doing it for: to protect 1.2 million people from the water. A huge responsibility. Which I gladly bear hear. But if I think about it for too long, it sometimes starts to get dizzy. 1.2 million. Can you imagine it?

Location: On the dyke in Katwoude, opposite ice cream parlour Willem Honingh.

Episode 10. There are the Waterlanders
Welcome to Waterland. Yes that's what it's called here. And for a reason, as you can see. All these villages you see here are home to people who have a thing for water. Because water is a danger, but also a happiness. A source of annoyance and of inspiration.

Location: On the dike in the Jan Hagelhoek

Episode 11. The last breach
You can hardly imagine it, but a disaster happened on this spot. During the storm surge of January 1916, I broke through as a dike. I was not strong enough. Not properly prepared for the force of the water and the wind. Now I lie very differently, and that's a good thing.

Location: On the Waterlandse Zeedijk, near the Diepe Gat, in Monnickendam.

Episode 12. Look a lapwing!
What a view huh? So as a dike, I get to look at this all the time. And it never gets boring because there is always something happening. Migratory birds, meadow birds, rabbits, foxes, mice. They fly over me or crawl into me. I think it's great fun. But one animal is very special.

Location: Car park at junction 518, on the sea dyke looking over the Oosterpoel, just before Uitdam.

Episode 13. People make the dike
Look, as a dike, I like people. After all, I'm there for them. But I have a special bond with the residents of Uitdam. You can see it too: nowhere else do I get as close to the houses as here. The village and I are one. And no matter how much the world changes, that bond will always be there.

Location: On the dike, by the parking lot and stone steps, on the south side of Uitdam.

Episode 14: How do you make a dike?
What do you think I'm made of as a dike? I didn't know, but you don't just build a dike like me. There are people who spend years studying that. Who come up with clever ideas about which materials are best to use, how to lay me down. And above all: how to maintain me.

Location: on the border of M15/M16 near Durgerdam
