Look through the eyes of artists

There is a hidden story behind Volendam's fame: in fact, the village owes its original fame to more than 1,800 artists who came here to paint between 1875 and 1940.

Artists from all over the world travelled to Volendam to paint. And these were no strangers: even Renoir, Kandinsky and Signac wanted to see for themselves.

Bursting with inspiration

The fishing village on the Zuiderzee proved to be an enclosed oasis of inspiration for many artists. A remote place with picturesque houses where the striking inhabitants in traditional dress still had their own customs. And were almost one with nature thanks to fishing.

And then there is the light. The special reflection of the sun on the Zuiderzee inland sea made the scenery even more colourful and intense. The artists could not believe their luck and often painted the most beautiful spots, the most remarkable people and everyday and special events in the open air.

Soon, the paintings, drawings and postcards went all over the world and the village made a name for itself after which everyone wanted to come and admire Volendam.
