From 1881, with Hotel Spaander as its beating heart, Volendam grew into one of Europe's most important artists' colonies. Artists from all over the world came to the village to capture life, light and people.
Remarkably, it was precisely here - at a time when female artists were not yet a matter of course - that women also found their place. They travelled to Volendam, worked there and recorded the village from their own perspective.
In Oe Vrauwe Kêike, the Volendams Museum brings this perspective together. Not the woman as subject on the canvas, but as maker. As an artist.
The exhibition shows work by female artists who depict Volendam in portraits, village scenes and scenes of everyday life. From recognisable fishing scenes to more hushed, personal moments. A different way of looking. A different experience of the same village.
Besides these historical works, the exhibition also offers space to contemporary female artists. They build on this tradition and translate their view into the now - sometimes in painting, but also in photography, sculptures and other contemporary forms.
