The colourful traditional costume came about because of Volendam's unique location and the proud, close-knit character of its inhabitants.
Unique clothing
Shielded from the outside world, the Roman Catholic village developed its own style of dress in addition to its own customs and dialect. A refined and exuberant style that has been carefully preserved for generations.
When international painters discovered the picturesque fishing village at the end of the 19th century, they were enchanted by the daily life in Volendam. And by those beautiful clothes of the women.
The many paintings and travel posters depicted these women in all their glory. And travelled the world at lightning speed. It became the iconic representation of Holland: the Volendam woman in traditional costume, with a windmill and colourful tulip fields in the background.
The tradition lives on
After World War II, traditional costumes slowly disappeared from the streets, first among men. Later also among women. Nevertheless, the tradition lives on: in museums, in works of art and on special occasions.
