Regional products route Waterland

(33 km)

Hop on your bike for a scenic route through the eastern part of Laag Holland. Freshly smoked fish in Volendam, Edam cheese and delicious dairy products from Waterland.

Waterland, as the region here is called, is home to a host of regional products, and each one more tasty than the next. With this route, you will discover both the former Zuidersteest towns and the rural area of Waterland-East. Tip: Make sure you have empty (bicycle) bags, because on the way you will come across plenty of goodies to take home with you!

You start the route in Edam, where you can learn more about the rich history of cheese making at the Kaaswaag. You can taste delicious cheese and, of course, buy some for home. During the summer months, this square is transformed into the Cheese Market of yesteryear every Wednesday morning. Edam also has several addresses for foodies. From a cookery shop for the real amateur chef to an experience on the history of Edam cheese.

After Edam, head towards Volendam for a well-earned lunch. Where else but at one of the many fish restaurants on the world-famous Dijk? On the waterfront, enjoy all the hustle and bustle of the harbour. Looking for real authenticity? Paviljoen Smit Bokkum has been Volendam's culinary calling card for over 150 years. In the restaurant, you will find original home-cooked delicacies together with a selection of traditional Volendam regional dishes. For a tasty snack, cycle on to Katwoude. Willem Honigh's IJstuin (Ice Cream Garden) has been serving delicious ice cream for generations.

Then cycle to picturesque Monnickendam. Here you can enjoy drinks and snacks at one of the catering establishments. Be sure to take a look at one of the largest marinas in the Netherlands!

Continue your route along the beautiful Gouwzee. Over the winding IJsselmeerdijk you cycle at your own pace towards the peninsula of Marken. Along the way, you can stop at various places for a picnic, to stretch your legs or simply to take beautiful pictures. Once you arrive at Marken, you will enjoy extraordinary views. Look out over the water, past the gables of authentic wooden houses in the wharfs and, if you look closely, you can already see the lighthouse 'Het paard van Marken' in the distance. Here on Marken, you will find a farm where you can buy local dairy products and also in the Havenbuurt you will find local shops with a diverse selection. In the harbour, you will find several restaurants where you can enjoy a snack or drink with a view over the Markermeer.

To complete this round trip, take the Marken Express - for a fee - to cross to Volendam. The ferry will take you to Volendam from where you can cycle back to Edam.
