Discover the Beemster with children

Zuidoostbeemster

We started the day with an outing: the Beemster Kabouterpad. It is autumn, so there are leaves, chestnuts and acorns everywhere. The children were given their own gnome pack (€4.50 per child). This includes an assignment booklet, pointed hat and some goodies for the road (packet of drinks and biscuit) in a knapsack.

With gnome hats on and knapsack in hand, the children set off with Bennie the Wood Gnome. The tasks, from sneaking through the forest to making a nature painting, were a great success. And of course they received their gnome diploma afterwards. A great start to the day!

Middenbeemster

Our next destination was the beautiful old corn mill De Nachtegaal. This mill is still in full operation and we were given a fun guided tour. Together with the children, we climbed to the mill attic and listened with fascination to the story of grinding grain into flour.

Of course, we couldn't leave without a bag of 'Beemster Betje Pancake Mix', the local secret for delicious pancakes (you can find the recipe in the leaflet!).

Middenbeemster

What are pancakes without milk? Exactly! At Nicolaashoeve Farm, the children were allowed to tap their own bottle of fresh milk from the milk tap. With tokens and glass bottles (available at the vending machine, debit card possible) they enthusiastically set to work. All of them wanted to fill their own bottle, of course! A fantastic experience to be so directly involved with your food and drink.

Besides the milk, we got to look into the barn, where there were just a couple of newborn calves (5 days old). The farmer spoke passionately about them.

Noordbeemster

Time for a snack! At Beemster Valery farm, they have their own shop stall. Here we bought a bag of Beemster Chips, made from local potatoes Beemster Valery. And yes, that bag had to be opened immediately, of course! Besides the chips and real Beemster chocolate, we also took fresh broccoli. That way it all stays nicely balanced.

Westbeemster

At the CONO Cheese shop, everyone could pick their favourite Beemster cheese. Young, old, spicy or with pepper, the choice was huge. The children loved the tasting and proudly walked out with their own piece of cheese. And of course we took a photo by the iconic Beemster cow!

Middenbeemster

For our apples, we stopped at Farm Knip. Here you can buy fresh apples, pears and apple juice via a fruit machine. The children thought it was like a present to get their fruit out. And we got tasty apples for pancakes again!

Middenbeemster

Our last big stop (we thought) was at Het Beemsterlant's Varken (The Beemster Pig), the only pig farm in the Beemster region. The children immediately spotted the go-karts and play tractors and tore towards the stables. There we could see the newborn piglets in the farrowing pen, it doesn't get any cuter! Upstairs in the stables, we learned more about pig life. An educational and fun visit.

Middenbeemster

Before heading home, we stopped at Kaasboerderij Groot to get fresh eggs. Of course a piece of cheese was tasted again, it remains a feast.

Zuidoostbeemster

We ended the day at Playground De Spelemei, where the children could expend some of their energy. While we enjoyed a well-earned rest, they flew from swing to trampoline.
