13x fine dining in Volendam - November 8, 2024 - by Kim Tol

What is a day in Volendam without a bite to eat? In the beautiful fishing village, the choice of restaurants is vast. To make the choice a little easier, I reveal below the top 13 restaurants of Volendam with a few nice menu tips

1. Pavilion Smit Bokkum

When you think of Volendam, you naturally think of fish. One of the best restaurants to eat fish is Paviljoen Smit Bokkum. In the summer months, Volendam regional dishes can be enjoyed on the terrace overlooking the IJsselmeer. If you want to try one of these dishes definitely choose the stewed IJsel lake eel. Better known in Volendam as Rechtop in 't pannetje. This name owes this dish to its preparation method. The eels are literally placed upright in the pan to stew. This dish has been lovingly prepared this way in the kitchens of Volendam for over 100 years. A visit to this restaurant is an authentic experience in itself, as Volendam's eel smokehouse has been located here since 1856. A guided tour of the smokehouse and a visit to the eel sound museum above the smokehouse is a must.

2. Restaurant and Café De Dijk

In the middle of Volendam's characteristic harbour is Restaurant en Café De Dijk, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a real dinner from early morning until late at night. Go for risotto Monday, dinner Tuesday or the chef's weekly menu. At Restaurant and Café de Dijk, you will find something for everyone. A great tip for when you're out and about with friends or family is this restaurant's high wine. What does this entail? A well-rounded evening of wine and matching dishes.

3. Le Pompadour

This restaurant has international cuisine and takes its name from Madame De Pompadour, the mistress of French king Louis XV. As tempting as this lady was for the king, this restaurant's dishes are for you. Besides the extensive menu, the restaurant also has a separate wine bar where you will be taken on a wine tour of different countries. Did you know that there is an Old Dutch hotel above this restaurant? Here you can stay overnight with a beautiful view of the IJsselmeer.

4. 't Havengat Seafood and Eatery

Recently, the concept of the Restaurant 't Havengat underwent a metamorphosis. As a result, you can now choose from two restaurants. As the name suggests, the new restaurant specialises in fish dishes, from fruit de mer to Thai fish stew. These two restaurants also offer various packages such as high beer, high wine or high tea. If you are with a larger group, be sure to opt for the "Volendam junk table" also known as shared dinning. Delicious dining and tasting of everything!

5. Van den Hogen

Restaurant Van den Hogen has been a real family business for more than a century. Started as a café and developed into a high-quality restaurant serving fine fish and meat dishes. Here, too, you can sample genuine Volendam specialities such as the aforementioned stew eel. Lick your fingers. A tip is Van den Hogen's Irish coffee. This is prepared at the table in the classic way with hand whipped cream. The walls of the restaurant are covered with beautiful paintings of old Volendam scenes. Ask the staff for the personal story of the painting hanging by your table or easily look it up yourself, on Van den Hogen's site.

6. Lotje Wine & Dine

The name of this restaurant says it all: dining with a good glass of wine? Then Lotje Wine & Dine is the place to be. Besides the regular lunch and dinner menu, this restaurant also has a share & dine menu. The dishes on this menu are slightly more finely priced so you can order several dishes and share them with your table guests. Recently, this restaurant also offered a full breakfast menu. So at 8.30 in the morning, you can already come to this restaurant for a nice breakfast.

7. The Lunch

If you are looking for quick service, then Havenrestaurant De Lunch is a must. Here, your food will be on the table within ten minutes if desired. Want an even faster lunch? Then make use of the take a way counter. Here you can also buy various sandwiches and hot dishes to eat outside. The value for money is slightly friendlier compared to other restaurants on the embankment and therefore perfect for a sumptuous lunch. Order tasty crispy kibbeling here with a local beer and you're good to go.

8. Pieterman

Restaurant Pieterman is located at the marina of the Marinapark and has a large terrace. Besides the lunch and dinner menu, this restaurant also has a unique Volendam tapas concept. In Volendam, this is the only restaurant where you can enjoy unlimited small dishes at lunch or in the evening. Highly recommended is the beef stew. It is prepared with Volendam bock beer. A real treat!

9. Thirty 5

Thirty 5 is a high-end restaurant that has really made a name for itself in Volendam in the short years they have been open. The restaurant is located on the corner of the harbour with a direct view of the water. On Wednesdays, they present a true sushi night where various types of sushi can be ordered. Furthermore, they always work with daily fresh products and in summer it is great to relax on the beautiful terrace.

10. Restaurant Da noi

Is a new Italian restaurant set up by 2 Italian guys, hailing from Sicily. If you want really good and tasty Italian food near the port, this is the only right address. Personal favourites for me are still the various kinds of Bruchetta and the Ravioli. Of course, a bite of tiramisu in an Italian restaurant cannot be missed either, and it really is to be savoured. The prices may be a little higher, but the food is well worth it.

11. Grand Café de Botterwerf

Also known as Volendam's best hotspot. In summer, there is plenty of room on the beautiful terrace right on the IJsselmeer. The dishes served are low key and suitable for a lovely dinner or lunch with family or friends. The beers here are home-brewed and if you are lucky there is live music. In fact, the well-known band the 3JS often perform here. Partly because the restaurant was partly set up by the band's singer. It is also possible to book a tour of the brewery. Take a look at the website for more information on the possibilities.

12. Indrapoera

The Indrapoera is a recently renovated Chinese restaurant where you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat concept. For a fixed amount you can sample everything from the kitchen, from freshly made sushi to dim sum appetisers, grilled salmon and familiar dishes like chicken curry. I personally have never managed to taste all the dishes on the menu even though I have been there a few times. A personal recommendation is the rendang stew. For licking your fingers.

13. Restaurant-café de Vrijheid

This restaurant is known as a brown café on Volendam's harbour. Yet you can come here 7 days a week for delicious food and drinks, both inside and on the terrace in summer. You can opt for a changing Freedom menu or choose from the extensive menu or lunch menu. The restaurant is well known for its kibbeling, which is indeed delicious.
