Migratory bird trail | Stage 5
Stage five of the Trekvogelpad trail starts in the sprawling ribbon village of Landsmeer. Nice to know is that in the 19th century, Landsmeer was one of the largest suppliers of chicken and goose eggs what with the Zaanse biscuit and rusk industry being a major customer.
After you've left Landsmeer for a while, you'll take the ferry to bird paradise: Waterland. Indeed, it is bursting with meadow birds here. From godwits and lapwings to oystercatchers and redshanks, you name it and you'll come across it here!

After you've left Landsmeer for a while, you'll take the ferry to bird paradise: Waterland. Indeed, it is bursting with meadow birds here. From godwits and lapwings to oystercatchers and redshanks, you name it and you'll come across it here!
While walking through Waterland, you can enjoy not only the beautiful meadow birds, but also the picturesque villages Broek in Waterland and Zuiderwoude. With its famous wooden 'Broeker' houses surrounded by meadows, Broek in Waterland can certainly compete for the title of 'most beautiful village in the Netherlands'. Zuiderwoude is also a gem. This is the oldest village in the municipality of Waterland and, unlike the other villages in Waterland, has actually shrunk. In fact, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the village was twice its size. Yet the village has not lost its charm thanks to its historic farms, surrounded by water and meadows.
