To improve the local drainage, the board buys land from Sr. Jan Fransz. Van der Lee to place a watermill here.
Michiel Poppen, the treasurer, pays him fl. 289 so that a millrace and mill yard can be built at mill het Meercatje (Meerkatje) on plot 82.
The mill was one of the small mills of the cleared Spijkerboorder corridor. After 1971, the mill ditch was drained.
The Meercatje was one of two Kilmills in the Beemster. One stood near the Rijper molengang and the other here, in the middle of the polder on the Middenweg. Both kept the water level in the deepest part of the polder. When, after careful consideration, the Hoofdingelanden decided to switch to steam pumping, the Meercat was sold in 1886 for 900 guilders to the polder board of the Overdie and Achtermeer polder near Alkmaar, because their mill had burned down. The same happened to the old Kilmolen (the Meercatje) as it burned down on its third strand in 1912.
