Outer weather route
This cruising route runs through Waterland-East. Through beautiful ditches and elongated peat ponds past many riparian areas where you can hear the many Reed Birds.
The route is perfect for canoeing. The route is easy to follow using the green place name signs along the water. Of course, the best way to discover Waterland is by boat. The reclamation of the peat bog and the many floods of the former Zuiderzee have created wide ditches and lakes. Find your way among the riparian vegetation in which small birds hide. Occasionally, the silence is broken by the twittering of a reed warbler, a little or a great caracid.
Various species of ducks, coots, grebes and, of course, swans bob about on the water all year round.
In spring, the wet meadows are visited en masse by meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit, redshank and lapwing. The trip takes you through the small village of Zuiderwoude and the 'town' of Monnickendam with its Waterlands Museum and Grote Kerk. Definitely worth docking.
