Walk around the Fort near Spijkerboor
Hidden in the Beemster polder landscape lies the Fort near Spijkerboor, the largest fort of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Visit the fort and take a nice walk!
Around the fort, outside the moat, Natuurmonumenten has set out a nature walk. Nature is carefully managed and modestly developed. The fort itself has an enclosed corridor that provides access and shelter for overwintering butterflies and bats, but in the public area one sometimes encounters them too. In the grass-covered layer on the concrete fort, rare wax plate mushrooms feel at home. The walk is freely accessible.

Since the late 1950s, Fort near Spijkerboor no longer has military status. Nature is allowed to take its course. You can walk on the dike surrounding the fort, with wide views over the surrounding polders. In the reed beds of the fort's moat you can hear the reed warbler and lesser reed warbler.

Birds of prey such as marsh harrier, kestrel and little owl benefit from the peace and quiet at the fort. At the Fort near Spijkerboor you will surprisingly find plants that love sandy soil and are not found in the surrounding polders. That's because the fort is covered with dune sand from IJmuiden. With the sand came the seeds of, for example, ox tongue and snakeweed.
The fort is also a valuable winter home for several species of butterflies and bats, including the bearded bat.
