Tramway route
The Tramway Route is a diversion along the former railway line of the Waterland tram towards Monnickendam. The route continues past new buildings in the Waterland style, reclaimed lakes and the Volgermeerpolder.
Broek in Waterland originated as a marsh or trousers village. After the reclamation of the peat, the inhabitants moved to the higher embankments of the river De Leet. Large parts in Waterland East are managed by the Forestry Commission, but farmers outside the reserve areas help with nature management. The wet grasslands are visited by many meadow birds in spring.

C. New-Waterland style: a new housing estate in the Waterland style. The footpath on the grass quay on the east side with white decking is an old church path.
D. Belmermeer: this is a deep peat lake that was drained in 1628 with Amsterdam's capital, among others, at the same time as two other Waterland lakes, Broekermeer and Buikslotermeer.
E. Volgermeerpolder: from 1968-1981, this was Amsterdam's rubbish dump, where not only domestic and urban waste was dumped, but also chemical industrial waste. The discovery of leaking drums of toxins caused an environmental scandal in 1980. After much research and preparation, large-scale soil remediation was started in 2003, following an eco-variant approach. In 2011, the area was reopened to the public as a nature reserve.
