The Crommeny Road

(9.5 km)

So much to see, so much to experience! From the water, the polder at Uitgeester and Alkmaarder Lake surprises you again and again. Step into a canoe and follow the Crommenijeroute. According to experts, this is one of the most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!

Narrow ditches and small lakes with thick reeds alternate. And who knows, you might even be sung to by the various meadow birds that live here in summer. The black-tailed godwit, redshank and lapwing find this area a wonderful place to nest and raise their young. Outside the breeding season (1 April to 15 June), you can also simply sail through the reserve area. If you are lucky you might see a bittern or bluethroat there. By the way, this canoe route is very suitable to do with (small) children. The thick reed fringes along the side of the route ensure that you are hardly bothered by the typically Dutch wind. You have to stay alert during the route, because every now and then you come across a small farm bridge that you have to paddle under. And sometimes they are really low....

Along the way, you will come across the Tweede Broeker mill. This is one of the five mills that used to keep the Uitgeesterbroek polder dry. You also paddle past the old pumping station Meldijk and next to it a late mediaeval lock with drawbridge. So there is plenty to see here!
