The lost mill route
See the reflection in the water as you cruise slowly through small ditches and under narrow bridges. Follow the yellow route.
A delightful boating route through the Eilandspolder with a view of the village outskirts of Grootschermer. Canoes and rowing boats can be rented at Boerderij Schermereylandt. The Schermereylandt is unique because of its windmill history. A total of forty mills stood on the island, all with their own function including the flour mill, the wood sawmill and the oil mill. On the route, you will see a number of water mills that will remind you of times gone by.
This old farming area is best discovered from the water. Sail through the fresh greenery and along the reed beds where the animals hide well but if you stay calm you will see the reed warblers, the magnificent harrier and the spoonbill from very close quarters.
Tip: Don't forget your camera.

On the way, you can also stop for some home-made sandwiches. At selection points 16 and 33 (marked on the map Vaarnetwerk Eilandspolder for canoes and whisper boats) a picnic table is waiting for you. Hungry but didn't bring anything with you? Then there is also the option of going ashore near selection point 18 for Café and restaurant Het Genot van Grootschermer, a little further on. Rental for canoes and whisper boats is also available at this location.
Follow the yellow signposts in the water. You can also shorten this route by following the grey arrow. The Eilandspolder boating network has five different routes by means of a junction system, so it is also possible to follow a different colour route along the way.
