From World Format route
Doing three UNESCO World Heritage monuments in one day? Then the 'Van Wereldformaat' cycling route is just the thing for you! This route takes you along the Amsterdam canals, the Defence Line of Amsterdam and through reclamation area De Beemster.
This route largely follows the route people used to take between the Grachtengordel and Droogmakerij de Beemster, taking you past three cultural highlights.
Besides the three UNESCO World Heritage monuments, there is much more beauty to see during this cycle tour. There are the endless vistas in Waterland with its soaring skies, or the stately farmhouses in De Beemster that were once built here by wealthy merchants from Amsterdam. Consider farm De Eenhoorn in Middenbeemster with a facade like that of a canal house.

The cycle tour also passes the Zaan with its old warehouses and the Zaanse Schans where mills, barns, houses and museums give a picture of life and work in the eighteenth century. In De Beemster itself, you see the geometrically sleek lines of the polder contrasting with the jaggedly winding patterns of the old peat meadows. And every now and then, as you cycle, you pass a fortress that once had to protect the capital from enemy troops as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam.
