Leave the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam behind and discover vast Waterland! Winding dykes and roads lead you through the flowery landscape and past cosy villages such as Durgerdam, Holysloot and Zuiderwoude.
Hop on your bike at Amsterdam Central Station and escape the hustle and bustle of our capital city. Cycle over the Schellingwouderbrug bridge and before you know it, you will find yourself in an oasis of tranquillity. The vast Waterland with its open peat meadows stretches out before you, where old stream channels of the peat rivers the Ae and the Die meander through the landscape. Via equally winding dykes and roads, you meander through a flowery area, with endless grasslands, waving reeds and numerous ponds. In the small villages you encounter along the way, such as Durgerdam and Holysloot, the typical Waterland houses and bridges will take you back in time.

Halfway along the route, you cycle into the village of Zuiderwoude. A so-called ribbon village where houses used to be built side by side on a dike. This elevation was necessary because the peat here used to hold the water like a sponge. But the area was drained and the peat collapsed. What remains is a historic farming village with beautiful farms and wooden houses surrounding a lovely church. Feel free to stop along the way at the beautiful spots you come across along the way and enjoy!

Reformed Church of Zuiderwoude
The church of Zuiderwoude is a national monument and was recently restored in 2 phases. The church was built in 1877. The showpiece is the beautiful 17th-century pulpit from the previous church building.

Since 2007, the church has owned a monumental organ from 1863. During the summer months, the church is open for visits.
History
The church is central to the village. A chapel is said to have stood on the site of the current church as early as the 11th century, which was lost in an attack by Spanish troops in 1573. A new church was built in 1624, but was largely destroyed by fire in 1714. It was not until 1877 that another church was built. That building still stands today; it was renovated in 2004.

The Breedijk Hoeve is an organic farm with 100 hectares of land in rural Amsterdam-North. Rural North is part of Waterland-East, a culturally valuable peat meadow area.

The Breedijk Hoeve is an organic farm with 100 hectares of land in rural Amsterdam-North. Rural North is part of Waterland-East, a culturally valuable peat meadow area.
The Breedijkhoeve operates in an organic, animal and nature-friendly way. The cows and sheep are kept organically. For a large part of the year, these suckler cows (cows where the calves are allowed to stay with their mother to drink her milk) and the sheep with their lambs walk outside in the meadows.
The Breedijk Hoeve has been actively engaged in nature management for more than 20 years in collaboration with the Water, Land and Dykes Nature Association. By working the land in a meadow bird-friendly way, the Breedijkhoeve helps to conserve various species of meadow birds.
The Breedijkhoeve sells organic beef and fruit jam from its own farm in its farm shop.
Ransdorper Tower
The Tower of Ransdorp is a monumental tower at the Church of Ransdorp. The tower was built between 1502 and 1542 in Gothic style.

A remarkable feature of this tower is its flat roof. Presumably, the tower was never completed due to lack of money. One advantage of this is that the tower is a perfect location to look out over the vast Rural North. This was also experienced by the Germans, who used the tower as a vantage point during World War II. Also special is the enormous size of the tower, compared to the relatively small village of Ransdorp. To understand this better, we need to go back in time.
