Routes you should definitely try out

Laag Holland, the beautiful National Landscape between Amsterdam, Zaanstad, Alkmaar and Hoorn, lends itself to quiet, inspiring bike rides. Watching the many unique bird species you will encounter along the way, and enjoying silence and greenery. Laag Holland is a landscape par excellence to discover by bike, gently meandering through a primal Dutch landscape. The routes below are definitely worth trying out.

The Tea Gardens Route
This 32-kilometre route gives you ample opportunity to discover the beauty of Laag Holland. A route you can ride on a sports bike, but good city bikes or granny bikes will also suffice. From the Zuiderwoude starting point, you cycle through a fascinating landscape on your way to Holysloot. Eventually you pass several beautiful tea gardens, where you can pause and enjoy exclusive delicacies, with views of water and beautiful birds.

Old Dutch Ferry Route
Ultimate and adventurous enjoyment of the watery landscape. Cycle along the foothills of the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer lake and regularly hop on one of the five ferries that take you across in the old-fashioned way. Part of the route takes you along the ring canals of the Schermer, Beemster and Starnmeer polder dykes. Here you can clearly see the height differences between the low land and high water.

Cycling below sea level
This beautiful route, 34 kilometres long, winds between Volendam, Edam and Purmerend. It is a very special experience to cycle past places where dykes broke earlier in history, and to find yourself below sea level. This route connects culture with nature, and takes you past many of the beautiful places in Laag Holland. Enjoy silence, panoramic views, water and meandering bog rivers.
