Old Purmerend Cemetery
This cemetery on Nieuwstraat in Purmerend is one of the town's oldest monuments.
The first mention of this cemetery dates from 1743, on Tirion's town map of Purmerend. Since then, the shape of the cemetery did change. On the map, the cemetery has the shape of the Bastion.
The entrance gate was added in 1913, designed by Architect P. de Groot in Purmerend, commissioned by the Purmerend Reformed Congregation. Between all the graves is also the family tomb of the heirs of C. de Jong, which was designed by M. v.d. Veen in 1905. This grave stands out because of the white marble vase on a column with draperies. This image represents the transience of life. Transitoriness symbols, including a butterfly and three poppies, are also placed next to the inscriptions on the grave.
