Swimming in the Gouwzee
Swimming water
On the east side of Hemmeland there are 3 sandy beaches for swimming recreation. The shallow water (max. 1.25m) is protected with a ball line. The water is checked for quality every fortnight by the province between 1 May and 30 September.
Mirror pavilion
Near the southernmost beach is the Mirror Pavilion where you can get snacks, ice cream and a drink. There is also a public toilet here.
Water sports on Hemmeland
Hemmeland is largely surrounded by water, making it a perfect place for practising water sports in the broadest sense.
Water and jet skiing
Off the coast of Hemmeland there is also a speedboating zone, recognisable by the yellow buoyage markings. Water sports and jet skiing are allowed within these buoys.
Windsurfing
Near car park 5 is the surf loop. There is a small office here where a first aid post is located on nice summer days.
Sailing school
For sailing and surfing lessons as well as sailing camps, you can visit 'Zeilschool Vertrouwen', which moors its training ship off the coast of Hemmeland during the summer season.
Events
There are a number of grass fields in the recreation area that are ideal for holding various events. Several events take place in the area every year.
In winter
The area is also worth a visit in winter for a brisk walk or a drink at the Mirror Pavilion.
Ice sailing
If it has frozen for a few days, the Gouwzee is one of the first places in the Netherlands where you can go ice-sailing. For years, the beach near Mirror Pavilion has been used as a starting point for DN ice-sailing ships, and the Association for the Preservation of Historic Ice-Sailors can often be found on the Gouwzee with their restored ships. The aim of the association is to collect, purchase, preserve and restore traditional ice sailing vessels from this region. See www.ijsschuiten.nl.
Parking and public transport
The recreation area has a large car park. Hemmeland is also easy to reach by public transport (bus 111, 114 from A'dam CS).
