Shipyard Groot b.v.
Centuries ago, Edam had a thriving shipbuilding industry. As early as the 15th century, there was shipbuilding along the banks of the river IJe in Edam. The peak of shipbuilding in Edam was in the 16th century.
Back then, the city had as many as 33 shipyards. Much of the VOC fleet was built here! Of the 33 shipyards, only one still exists today and that is Shipyard Groot.
With increasing construction of houses in later times, the remaining wharves disappeared, except for the wharves in the bend of the small river IJe. It is the only place in Edam, which has retained its original function through the centuries until today. As the birthplace of Edam Shipbuilding, the cultural-historical value of this site is extremely high.
