An etching of the Beemster gate

Beemster Gate | Beemster Mills

When the Beemster lake was drained, some problems arose such as access to the new land. You could only cross the wide ring canal by boat, which is why bridges were at the top of the surrounding villages' wish lists.

After tough negotiations, these appeared in several places. Usefulness and necessity, but above all who pays for it, were important questions. In August 1610, the 'commissioners of the Beemster and the Lords of Purmerende' reached an agreement that a bridge would be made over the ring canal. They called it the Beemster Gate.
