Historic streets
The mansions built on Herengracht, Emmakade and Julianastraat, among others, exude class and luxury and were very special in the early 20th century.
This part of Purmerend was the first 'new housing estate' outside the town canal. Today, many of these stately homes are national monuments. Want to know which ones they are? Then look at the signs on the facades or check the Atlas of the Purmerend municipality.
On Herengracht, you will find the Schoonoord and Maria villas, both designed by architect Jan Stuyt, among others. On Emmakade stands the former Liduina Hospital (1950-1988), also designed by Stuyt. Originally built in 1911 as a Roman Catholic home for the elderly and now converted into flats. The blockhouse on Julianastraat 9 was delivered at the time as a kit from Silesia, Poland and was originally a residence for the then mayor. Architect J.J.P. Oud designed the four workers' houses on Vooruitstraat 143 to 149, as well as the building on Wilhelminalaan 10. The original function of the latter building was an association building of the Werkmansvereniging Vooruit.
