Grote Kerk Edam
On the city outskirts of Edam you will find the Sint Nicolaaskerk, also known as the Grote Kerk. The monumental hall church is among the top 100 national monuments in the Netherlands and is known for its 32 stained-glass windows, magnificent organ and beautiful Librije.
From 1400, the Great or St Nicholas Church was built in stages. The oldest church was a much smaller, so-called cross church. In the first half of the 15th century, construction of the late Gothic-style hall church began. After years of hard work, construction of the church building, plus tower and portals, was completed around 1518. Unfortunately, a nightmare came true in 1601. A huge fire, caused by lightning in the church tower, destroyed the roofs and much of the interior. Thanks to wealth and large donations, the church building was quickly repaired. The reconstruction took a total of 24 years.

The 'new' 32 stained glasses are from the period 1602 -1627, a heyday of stained glass, and are done in Renaissance style. In 1699, lightning struck the tower again. It was then decided to build the tower lower, which was realised in 1701. From about 1590 to 1830, burials were made in the church. Napoleon forbade it. After that, burials took place in the monumental cemetery adjacent to the church.
