To your right, you see many sailing ships. These are mostly pleasure yachts. In fact, Monnickendam is currently the largest marina in the Netherlands. In summer, the town attracts many water sports enthusiasts who go sailing on the IJsselmeer, among other things.
The city also has a large brown fleet of around 25 historic ships, such as tjalks, botters and clippers. Chances are you will see one here. This brown fleet gets its name from the sails, which used to be often brown. Nowadays, this is not always the case.
