On Christmas Day, Christmas in Monnickendam gets off to a very special start: early in the morning, music rings out through the streets. At 7.00 am, a brave group of singers gather at the sexton’s house of the Grote Kerk to bring the Christmas story to life through song.
Even those travelling alone need not feel out of place. Every year, around 60 singers join in and, with guitar accompaniment, songbooks and, above all, plenty of enthusiasm, they sing together. Starting from the Grote Kerk, the route winds its way through the city, ending at around 8.30 am at the Weeshuis.
A warm send-off awaits there with Christmas cake, coffee and hot chocolate.
Participation is free of charge. A voluntary contribution towards expenses is appreciated.
