In a small Scottish town in the mid-1980s, John Davidson grew up with Tourette’s syndrome. ‘I swear’ refers to the swear words that constantly slip out, but also to his repeated promise that he doesn’t mean it and has no control over it.
A perfect summary of the fine line along which the film skilfully navigates: on the one hand, it acknowledges how amusing Davidson’s tics and swearing seem at first glance; on the other, it becomes painfully clear just how difficult they can make his life. What for others is simply a night out is, for Davidson, a major undertaking. The filmmaker chooses not to focus on Davidson’s problems, but on the people who support him. Brilliant casting makes Davidson a multifaceted character, and the filmmaker delivers a true audience favourite. Davidson ultimately becomes a pioneering, highly acclaimed activist and advocate for his fellow sufferers in the UK.
