A painting full of flowers and butterflies

Small creatures that many people find scary, dirty or creepy are, in fact, something that paper artist Geertje Aalders finds absolutely beautiful. Her refined paper-cutting art is teeming with beetles, bumblebees and butterflies.

For this exhibition at the Zaans Museum, she draws inspiration from nature and from the Verkade picture albums from the early twentieth century.

Seeing differently means seeing more
In the exhibition, Aalders brings the Verkade albums to life. Detailed paper flowers spring from Verkade tins and picture albums, whilst butterflies and bees crawl across the pages. In this way, Aalders shares her love of nature with visitors.

Take the time to have a good look at the back of a wasp, the wing of a butterfly or the snout of a beetle. If you look closely, you’ll discover just how special and beautiful these tiny creatures are. And you can take your time examining a paper insect up close, even if you might find the real thing a bit unnerving.

The exhibition is an invitation to adults and children alike to pause for a moment, look closely and discover nature through fresh eyes.
