The history of the Schermer Island in the museum in 't Houten Huis. The museum takes visitors through the multifaceted history of De Rijp and its surroundings. Short films introduce the story of the Schermereiland and its centuries-long struggle against the water.
The ground floor focuses on herring fishing, whaling and seafaring, with old sea charts, ship models, journals, whale bones and a special kayak from Greenland. The men's room is also furnished as the study of a herring and whaling ship owner.
On the upper floor, timber construction, major fires and firefighting come to life. The painting depicting the great fire in ‘ De Rijp ’ in 1654 is an impressive highlight. There is also a focus on the Mennonites, the many windmills on Schermereiland, hemp processing and Jan Adriaansz Leeghwater, the famous windmill builder and hydraulic engineer from De Rijp.
