The history of the Schermer Island in the museum in 't Houten Huis. The museum takes visitors through the multifaceted history of De Rijp and its surroundings. Short films introduce the story of the Schermereiland and its centuries-long struggle against the water.
The ground floor focuses on herring fishing, whaling and seafaring, with old sea charts, ship models, journals, whale bones and a special kayak from Greenland. The men's room is also furnished as the study of a herring and whaling ship owner.
Upstairs, timber construction, major fires and firefighting come to life. The painting of the great fire in De Rijp in 1654 is an impressive masterpiece. There is also attention to the Mennonites, the many mills on the Schermer Island, hemp processing and Jan Adriaansz Leeghwater, the famous mill builder and hydraulic engineer from De Rijp.
