‘Tuner’ is about Niki (Leo Woodall), a former pianist whose career comes to an abrupt end due to a hearing condition known as hyperacusis.
He is hypersensitive to everyday ambient noise and wears noise-cancelling earplugs or even a pair of heavy-duty headphones, as even the softest sounds are unbearable. This spells the end of his promising career as a pianist. He now works as a piano tuner in New York, side by side with the smooth-talking veteran Harry (Dustin Hoffman), who is himself losing his hearing. When criminals discover that Niki’s exceptionally keen ears can also crack safes, he becomes entangled in a world far beyond his comfort zone. Niki becomes a pawn in the criminals’ game. At the same time, he meets Ruthie, a talented music student who is living the dream he had to let go of. The film combines a light-hearted rom-com with a simmering crime thriller, whilst exploring what it means when your greatest gift is also your greatest burden.
