From 28 August, the Purmerends Museum and the Betje Wolff Museum in Middenbeemster will present, in their first joint exhibition, a rich overview of the work of ceramicist Wil van Blokland.
Wil van Blokland has been working with clay for forty years. What began as a fascination with craftsmanship has grown into an impressive body of work comprising monumental sculptures in which tranquillity, simplicity and expressiveness come together.
Simplicity and abstraction form the common thread running through her work. “Abstraction helps me to understand this complex world,” she says.
Her sculptures are not literal representations, but reduced forms — capsules, ovals, rings, and sometimes even seemingly everyday shapes such as a potato. Alongside her independent work, Van Blokland spent many years creating large-scale commissioned outdoor sculptures. Her sculptures find their place in public spaces, where they enter into a dialogue with the landscape and the viewer.
The Purmerends Museum is exhibiting a fine selection of her monumental and smaller works. A special atmosphere is created in the space, in which the tranquillity and beauty of her works are shown to their best advantage.
