As mid-20th-century Zaanse wooden houses and mills threaten to disappear under modern factories and housing estates, a unique rescue programme is launched.
Concerned Zaankanters see how the characteristic wooden buildings and small-scale landscape are rapidly disappearing due to industrialisation and modernisation. From that sense of urgency grows the initiative to preserve this heritage and save it for the future.
The result is the Zaanse Schans. How is it that this small Zaanse neighbourhood with its windmills and green houses has such global appeal? And how did the Zaanse Schans grow to become a symbol of the "real Netherlands"? Find out in the exhibition Dreams in wood. The story of the Zaanse Schans.
