Seventeen-year-old Ainara (convincingly portrayed by Blanca Soroa) is an intelligent and idealistic young woman who lost her mother at a young age.
Like her devout mother and other family members, she attends a Christian school. Everyone around her expects her to go to university, but she herself seems to be more drawn to a contemplative life as a nun. When Ainara tells her family that she is considering entering a convent, it provokes a range of reactions. Her father has his doubts, but above all wants to support his daughter. Her atheist aunt Maite believes her niece is on the verge of throwing her life away. Does she really want this, or has she been influenced by the spiritual guidance at her school? The film focuses on the emotions this stirs up within her family, without passing judgement. ‘Los domingos’ was a huge success in Spain, winning no fewer than five Goya Awards.
