New information boards
in the municipality of Waterland

Broek in Waterland – On Monday 3 August 2026, one of the four new information boards will be unveiled in the municipality Waterland. The signs are situated at special locations in Marken, Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam and Monnickendam, and each tells a local story within the overarching theme of ‘Living with the water’.
Water is ever-present in the municipality Waterland. It has shaped the landscape, determined where people could live and work, and continues to play an important role in daily life. The four new information boards bring these stories to life for residents and visitors alike.
The information boards have been installed at the harbour in Marken, the Havenrak in Broek in Waterland, near the former Ilpenstein Castle in Ilpendam and at the Zuidervesting in Monnickendam. Each board tells the story of the location and illustrates how its history and development are linked to the water.
Highlighting local stories
The Laag Holland Tourist Board commissioned the information boards on behalf of the municipality Waterland . The content was developed drawing on the expertise of various local experts and organisations, including the Waterlands Archief, the Broek in Waterland Historical Society and Mr Jan Schild.
“Thanks to this collaboration, the stories are not only historically accurate but also reflect the identity of the various villages and locations. We are grateful for the historians’ involvement,” says Managing Director Shirley Benoit ( Laag Holland Tourist Board).
“With these information boards, we want to introduce residents and visitors to the unique history of Waterland in an accessible way. Water is the connecting factor, but within that, every location has its own story,” said Hendrik Boland, deputy mayor of the municipality of Waterland.
Official unveiling in Broek in Waterland
The official unveiling will take place on Monday 3 August at the information board on the Havenrak in Broek in Waterland. Deputy Mayor Hendrik Boland and tourism policy officer Simone Vendel will be present on behalf of the municipality Waterland .
Following the unveiling, all four information boards can be viewed at their respective locations. The boards form a permanent addition to the information provision in the municipality and invite residents and visitors to reflect on the special relationship between Waterland and the water.
