5x things to do in Zeevang
Between the IJsselmeer and the vast polders lies De Zeevang, a region where the Dutch landscape still feels untouched. Here you can walk on dykes overlooking the water, cycle through historic villages and discover stories from the past. From an old school and an impressive museum to an authentic windmill and beautiful cycling routes - these are five activities you should not miss!
1. Step back in time at the Little School of Dik Trom
In Etersheim, you step inside a classroom from 1882, where the ghost of Dik Trom still haunts. This little school, once the place where the author of Dik Trom taught, breathes history. Take a seat in the wooden school desks, write on a slate and discover how children used to learn. Besides the history of education, you will also dive into the stories of Dik Trom himself - the headstrong but good-hearted boy who has inspired young and old for generations.
2. Learn about the battle against water at Mini Museum The Waterwolf
For centuries, water was both a friend and an enemy for the inhabitants of De Zeevang. At Mini Museum De Waterwolf, you will discover how the region fought against the 'water wolf'-the threatening Zuiderzee that swallowed up land and changed lives. This small but impressive museum tells the story of dykes, reclamation and the creation of the Zeevangpolder. Photographs, models and stories of the past show how ingenious techniques and perseverance shaped the landscape. A must-visit for those who want to better understand the history of North Holland!
3. Visitor centre De Breek & the Brekermolen
On the edge of the Etersheimer Braakpolder is Bezoekerscentrum De Breek, an atmospheric stopover in the middle of the countryside, where you can enjoy a snack and a drink among grazing sheep and meadow birds while looking out over the vast Markermeer. In addition, activities are organised all year round, perfect for young and old.
Right next to the visitor centre is the Brekermolen, a polder mill with a special story. Back in the late 19th century, this mill kept the water level in the polder in order until it was replaced by an electric pumping station in 1920. The mill fell into disrepair, but thanks to a six-year restoration, since 2005 it has been running as before. You can visit the inside of the mill and see for yourself how it has been restored to working order - behold this piece of living heritage!
4. Cycling through the open polder landscape
If you really want to experience De Zeevang, jump on your bike. The vast landscape with its winding dykes and picturesque villages is perfect for a relaxing bike ride. Choose a junction route and be led past historic farms, small churches and wide meadows where cows graze.
Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views over the Markermeer or stop in a cosy village for a coffee. Whether you take a short ride or plan a long trip, cycling through De Zeevang is an experience you won't soon forget.
5. Walking along water, meadows and history
De Zeevang lends itself perfectly to a walk along the most beautiful nature spots. Stroll along old dyke paths overlooking the water or stroll through the quiet polder where you only hear the birds and the rustling of the wind.
One of the most beautiful routes takes you past windmills, centuries-old farms and hushed villages where time seems to stand still. Or choose a trip along the Markermeer, where you will see ships sailing along the way and enjoy the endless views.
