World Heritage Trail

(50,0 km)
If you want to experience the poetry of the straight line, the you mustn’t miss the Beemster. Four centuries ago, new land and farms were designed here according to the Golden Ratio measurement.

This is a geometric ideal that is said to have been executed to perfection here. The Beemster also possesses other qualities, namely those of titillating pleasure havens where, four centuries ago, fabulously rich merchants from Amsterdam came to display their wealth. To escape the city they had exorbitant ‘country homes’ built so that they could enjoy all that the countryside had to offer in the summer months. Unfortunately, very little is left of those country residences. What you can see are the opulent stolp farmhouses that they had built for their land overseers, often decorated with facades resembling those of their canal properties in Amsterdam.

Building on that prosperous history, nowadays the De Beemster is mainly the producer of good quality cheeses, pears, grapes, fruit and meat. These delicacies are on sale in stalls or farm shops along the way or in one of the many restaurants where the cooking is top class. Along the way you can see luscious meadows where so much of beauty grows, full of Dutch cows and with picturesque villages like Grootschermer and De Rijp on the horizon.

How it works
You cycle the trail with the help of the so-called junction system. A junction is a uniquely numbered spot where two cycle paths cross each other. The trails in this book are set out on the basis of these numbers. The only thing you have to do is follow the numbers in the sequence in which they are presented. You can recognise the junctions by the green and white signs along the way.

How do I get there?
Public transport from Amsterdam CS. Busline 301 in the direction of Purmerend Overwhere or De Rijp. Get off at: Stadhuis Purmerend.

From the bus stop to the bicycle rental: Step off the bus and turn left. Follow the sign in the direction of the train station. The bicycle rental is here.
From the bicycle rental to the first junction: Cycle under the railway line and follow the signs in de direction of junction 25.
