Het Weeshuis

The Orphanage is a beautiful 16th-century building in the centre of Monnickendam. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was an orphanage, but it has now been converted into a charming tearoom that serves all sorts of warm drinks and hot snacks.

This former orphanage is now a tea room that serves up delicious homemade apple pie, tasty sandwiches and a smorgasbord of activities...and it's all for a good cause. The Orphanage is run by the Philadelphia Foundation, an organisation that supports people with disabilities throughout the Netherlands

On a pretty day, enjoy your lunch in their garden by the water. Or pick up a boat from their canoe-rental stand and actually paddle out in the water right from their jetty. For weekday rentals, you can book in advance with Edwin de Vries (tel: 06-14280132), while on weekends, Sabine Nelissen (tel: 06-30602065) offers guided tours.
