Limmer Die
The Limmer Die canoe route takes you through the old area of the Oer-IJ, a tributary of the old Rhine that flowed into the sea before the era of the Roman Empire. Cruise delightfully from Castricum to Limmen or Akersloot or choose one of the other pick-up points.
From Castricum, you sail along the Schulpvaart, over which shells used to be transported for the lime industry. Further on in Akersloot, you come across the old peat lakes Die and Kerkmeer. Along the banks of these you see large areas of reed. These are home to the reed birds. If you don't see them, you often hear them. Meanwhile, you will encounter grebes, moorhens, coots and other water birds on the water. For many meadow birds, you sail along the A9. This is an important meadow bird area managed by Landschap Noord-Holland.
To the north of Akersloot, you sail past the Noordermolen (1589), which you can view from the water. This mill still manages the Groot-Limmerpolder (1476 ha). South of Akersloot is Museumgemaal 1879. You can visit it on Sunday afternoons from April to October.
Useful information:
The route consists of several sub-routes with different distances. In addition, the connection from Castricum is closed between 1 October and 15 June.
