Water route
Those coming from Amsterdam will be amazed at how suddenly city gives way to nature here. Take a pleasant ferry ride and cycle through Amsterdam's nature in an increasingly hipper Amsterdam-Noord.
Start the cycle route through Amsterdam-Noord and cross the water by ferry. After less than half an hour, you will already see the vast enders of Waterland looming and the cycling tour can really begin!
Anyone riding clockwise from cycle junction 36 is immediately overwhelmed by the natural beauty of the Ilperveld. Hundreds of islands, ditches, ponds, reed beds and meadows grazed by cows and sheep give the feeling that you have not only travelled in distance but also in time. Indeed, the Ilperveld looks just as it did a century ago.

Those who choose to ride counter-clockwise will first explore the banks of the Gouwzee via Broek in Waterland and enjoy the view of Marken while cycling. The inhabitants of this former island had to fend off an erratic Zuiderzee for a long time. Yards were raised and houses were built on stilts. With the arrival of the Afsluitdijk, however, things are a lot quieter here. Fortunately, the characteristic houses and traditional costumes have remained. Very little has changed in the centre of Monnickendam since the eighteenth century either. The beautiful historic town centre has many monuments with beautiful gable stones that directly refer to the flourishing trade that once brought this town much prosperity. And while you're looking up, check out the tower of Waterlands museum De Speeltoren. Because this former town hall tower houses the oldest playable carillon in the world. Discover Amsterdam-Noord through this cycle route!

Did you know that years ago Landsmeer was world-famous for its eggs? Visit Het Grote Huis, the central place for the egg trade, and find out what this house meant to the egg trade,
In 1900, Landsmeer was world-famous for its eggs. In these years, as many as five million (!) eggs a year were exported from Landsmeer to London, and at its peak in the 1920s, as many as 50 million eggs a year were transported abroad. Not for nothing too that three quarters of Landsmeer's population worked in poultry farming and egg trading.
There are many relics of this successful period, of which The Big House is one. This was, in fact, the central place for the egg trade from 1900 onwards. Why do we hear you thinking now? Under the house, as many as 1 million eggs could be stored in the egg pits located there. The eggs were stored here until they went to the egg auction, which was located behind the house.

The nearly 10-metre-wide oak choir screen is one of the showpieces of the Great Church. The church can be visited from mid-May to the end of September. The church belongs to the Protestant congregation of Monnickendam.
History
In the late fourteenth century, the rapidly growing town of Monnickendam decided to build a new church. A location on the edge of town was chosen to protect the building from city fires. The construction took 250 years. After the Reformation, the church was set up as a Reformed church. In earlier years, those who could afford it were buried in the church.
Visit
The Great Church is open for public viewing during the summer months.
Services
Every fortnight, there are busy celebrations in this church.

Since 2007, the church has owned a monumental organ from 1863. During the summer months, the church is open for visits.
History
The church is central to the village. A chapel is said to have stood on the site of the present church as early as the 11th century, which was lost in an attack by Spanish troops in 1573. A new church was built in 1624, but was largely destroyed by fire in 1714. It was not until 1877 that another church was built. That building still stands today; it was renovated in 2004.
Services
Celebrations are at 10am on Sundays.
Extra
The Catharina Foundation - Church and Culture Working Group Zuiderwoude is responsible for cultural events in and from the church. Various gatherings, performances or concerts are organised by the Catherine Foundation.
