After a walk along the North Sea Canal, you will arrive at Fort Zuiderwijkermeer. Built in 1903, this beautiful fort formed the defence of the North Sea Canal. Years ago, the fort served as a supply point for other forts. Vegetables, potatoes and meat were brought in via the North Sea Canal and stored in the cellars. Then to be distributed from the fort to forts in the area. Today, the fort houses a company trading in special cheeses. In the cool rooms and tiled storage cellars, the cheeses can mature excellently. This keeps the old function of the fort intact, but in a modern jacket!
Via the Fire Line Road, you walk towards Recreation Area De Buitenlanden. Walking through this beautiful recreation area, you are surrounded by the green polders. Did you know that the Buitenlanden are the outer dike banks between Beverwijk and Assendelft? This area was connected to the Oer-IJ and flooded regularly. Since 2020, a special project, Landgoed Rorik, has started in this same area. Here, a group of entrepreneurs are developing a beautiful estate with a self-sufficient restaurant, small-scale campsite, organic farming, picking garden, vineyard and bird pasture.
The last stretch of the walk takes you right through the meadows to the dorpsstraat in Assendelft. On this stretch, you will encounter no less than two footbridges to cross the little water the Kaaik!
