Church of St Nicholas
The Grote Kerk is Monnickendam's most iconic historical building. The Grote Kerk is a three-hall church. The roofs of the three halls rest on the outer walls and on 24 pillars.
The nearly 10-metre-wide oak choir screen is one of the showpieces of the Great Church. The church can be visited from mid-May to the end of September. The church belongs to the Protestant congregation of Monnickendam.
History
In the late fourteenth century, the rapidly growing town of Monnickendam decided to build a new church. A location on the edge of town was chosen to protect the building from city fires. The construction took 250 years. After the Reformation, the church was set up as a Reformed church. In earlier years, those who could afford it were buried in the church.

The Great Church is open for public viewing during the summer months.
