Weighbridge
The beautifully restored weighbridge was built by the Coöperatieve Suikerfabriek 'Puttershoek' in the summer of 1952 for weighing sugar beet.
The sugar beets grown in De Beemster were loaded onto farm wagons, weighed on the weighbridge and then transported to the Zuiddijk where they were unloaded into a ship that took the beets to the sugar factory in Halfweg.
In 1954, a partnership of agricultural entrepreneurs from the area took over the weighbridge. Until 2002, all kinds of agricultural products were weighed on the weighbridge. After 2002, the weighbridge was no longer calibrated and fell into serious disrepair. After the restoration, the weighbridge can weigh again, but no longer for the agricultural sector. Its weighing capacity of up to 25 tonnes is too low for that. The weighbridge is an attraction not only from a tourist point of view but also for the surrounding local residents. The weighbridge and its operation can be included in teaching programmes.
