Church 'De Swaen'
On the so-called 'dark side' (shadow side) of the Voorhaven, on the spot where the first town hall stood until the 18th century, is today De Zwaan. This is the new name for the Lutheran Church.
It is a typical Lutheran church building, indicating that Edam was open to traders and workers from German and Scandinavian countries in the Golden Age. In these countries, with which the city traded, the Lutheran religion was professed. The predominantly Calvinist Edam merchants/regents did not want to stand in the way of their trading partners. So it could happen that the Edam city government, upon moving into the Council House on Damplein in 1737, donated the vacant space of the old Council House to the Lutherans for the construction of a church.
Anno now, the church is also used for lectures and concerts.
