Exhibition 'Water' by Anja de Graaff

Former Photographer des Waterlands Anja de Graaff explores diverse themes and styles in her photographs: from watery landscapes and tranquil macro shots to abstract images and portraits. In this exhibition, Water flows as a thread through her work. Surprising and impressive.

"When I was 12, I was at an uncle's birthday party. When asked where he was, I got the answer that he would be in his darkroom. Curious, I knocked on the door and saw the miracle of developing and printing for the first time. I got a Rolodex camera and a simple enlarger from that uncle and started photographing, developing in my parents' bathroom. That never left me.

At the ROC, I taught photography as an elective subject for 20 years in which students learned to develop and print in addition to taking photographs. In my later work as programme manager at the Municipality of Almere, I was in-house photographer one day a week. Besides portraits, and official moments, I made reportages of the development of areas in Almere. In my free work, I make a lot of macro photos in addition to abstract photos, landscapes. During my 1.5 years as Fotograaf des Waterlands, I deliberately combined these elements: for each theme, I always made three photos - a portrait, an abstract image, and a landscape or macro photo."
