For centuries, people have lived in an area where you can't actually live: the polder. A landscape that was once marshland and later constantly threatened by the wild Zuiderzee. Yet the inhabitants remained, living on land that is just short of water.
The exhibition Polder. Put the land to your hand tells the story of a thousand years of living with water. On display are the stories of pioneers, bright minds and go-getters who made it possible to live in the Zaanse polder. Farmers, artists, conservationists and dike diggers - they all contributed to the constant search for balance between man and nature in a landscape that is constantly taking shape anew.
An insight into the past, a look at the present and questions about the polder's future. Themes such as water management, climate change and spatial planning come together in a landscape full of history and development.
Activity programme
The exhibition contains interactive activity areas where you can puzzle, measure and design. For children and adults alike, there is plenty to discover about the versatility of the polder landscape. The programme is complemented by guided tours, lectures and activities in the surrounding landscape.
